Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, walked out of Portugal's camp after being benched, and they reached the Nations League last eight without him. Was the coach right to drop him?
Ronaldo was an unused substitute in a 2-1 win in Norway, then left the squad after coach Jorge Jesus said he would not start against Denmark. Jesus denies any rift. Ronaldo, the men's record international scorer with 146 goals, says he will explain his reasons in due course.
What happened
Cristiano Ronaldo started Portugal's opening Nations League game, a 1-0 win over Wales, but was an unused substitute in the 2-1 win away to Norway. After coach Jorge Jesus said Ronaldo would not start against Denmark either, the 41-year-old left the training camp, saying on Instagram that he would tell the Portuguese people the truth about his reasons in due course. Jesus denied any rift. Portugal then beat Denmark 4-2 and Norway 2-1, with Gonçalo Ramos starting in his place, to become the first team into the quarter-finals.
Why people disagree
Supporters of the coach say international places should go to whoever is in form, that no player should be guaranteed a start, and that four straight wins show the team can move on. Ronaldo's backers point to his record 146 goals and 234 caps, argue a captain deserves clearer handling, and note Jesus admitted he was wrong to have Ronaldo warm up at length before leaving him on the bench. Others say walking out let the team down, whatever the grievance.
What's still unclear
Ronaldo has not yet given the reasons he promised, and Jesus says there was no issue between them. It is unclear whether Ronaldo will be picked again, or choose to return, before the quarter-finals in March 2027.
